About the ArtistKate learned to sew, knit and crochet from her mother and always enjoyed making garments and decorative objects. When she began to acquire grandchildren, she bought an embroidery machine and devoted more time to sewing. Her first quilt, an original design, was made for her eldest granddaughter. Since retirement from the practice of Clinical Psychology, Kate has devoted a major portion of her time to learning and creating in the art quilt genre. She has no formal art training, but enjoys learning from books, workshops, and other quilters. Artists StatementThe art quilt is an extremely rich medium of artistic expression, because of the inclusion of texture, both visual and tactile, with color and form. I love the fact that quilting, both traditional and art quilting, is an art of the people, and characteristically American—a celebration of ingenuity, thrift, and innovation. In my work, I enjoy including traditional quilting designs, and also often a message or opinion. Artist Email |
